5 Advantages of Buying a Franchise

Advantages of Buying a Franchise
At Pinot & Picasso, we’ve seen firsthand the benefits of being a franchise. From our ongoing guidance to our franchise network to being cost-effective, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

Here are the five advantages of buying a franchise!

WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK

The massive benefit of franchising is that you won’t ever feel like you’re on your own. That’s one of the scary things about starting your own business. Pinot & Picasso offers the independence you desire for a small business, but the support from HQ will always be there.

We like to think our franchise network is one of the best aspects of our company. Not only is our HQ team supportive, but our franchisees are always there to offer advice, tips and support. They’ve all been in the same position of opening a studio and are encouraging your small business’s success.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

You don’t need to be a qualified business owner or have worked in the arts industry to operate a Pinot & Picasso studio. Our HQ team offers extensive training when you sign your final franchise agreement. From onboarding, local area marketing and website training, you’ll feel like your own boss in no time!

The training doesn’t stop there. Our HQ team runs webinars and organises monthly meetings to ensure you make the most of your small business throughout the year, especially during our busy periods like Christmas and Mother’s Day!

A KEY TO SUCCESS

In business circles, franchises have a higher success rate than start-up businesses. This doesn’t mean triumphs are guaranteed. We like to say you get out of your business what you put in.

While we provide you with the recipe for operating your studio and ongoing support, we love seeing our franchises come into their own as business owners and make the most of the opportunity. This is why many franchise owners turn this investment into a passion.

COST-EFFECTIVE, WE LIKE THAT

One of the big bonuses of franchising is that it can cost less than starting your own business in the same field. It knows that you’re investing your money into a business model that works and can give you peace of mind and motivation.

While we admire start-ups (we were one back in the day!), we’re proud of how our franchise ROI is, on average, 12 months, and our franchisees can start making profits from their studio.

REPUTATION

Reputation can be seen as a negative, depending on who you are. Still, we believe our combination of rapid growth and our unique and exciting entertainment experience bids us a positive reputation.

With over 70 studios across Australia and New Zealand in three years of franchising, we believe our reputation comes down to our successful digital business model, proven management and work practices and supportive HQ team.

Why Pinot & Picasso is the perfect side hustle

Paint and Sip Side Hustle

Side hustles are becoming more of the norm that we may realise. What can often start as a small hobby that can help you make money on the side, has transformed into a lifetime investment changing peoples’ way of life.

At Pinot & Picasso, we’ve seen this happen. Many franchisees purchase a Pinot & Picasso studio as a side investment while still working full-time in their field. This side hustle has soon become their passion and drive for getting out of bed in the morning.

There are plenty of reasons why Pinot & Picasso could be the side hustle you’ve been looking for, and don’t worry – we’ll tell you why!

the experience is the focus

Pinot & Picasso creates a unique and exciting entertainment experience. We perfectly pair two of life’s simple pleasures – art and wine! With this iconic combination, we bring an unforgettable paint and sip adventure every time our studio doors swing open.

Our business is built on enjoyment, good hospitality, and great customer service with art the supplement to our success.

a side hustle is empowering

Having multiple sources of income can definitely make you feel like a boss in your own right. A side hustle can put more money into your pockets which can help you to pay off any debts, save money and invest into more ventures.

Not only can it bring you economic value, having a side hustle might include learning a new skill, exploring a passion you didn’t know you had, or discovering a different side to you!

Nick Loper, creator of the podcast Side Hustle Nation, believes people look to increase their earning potential outside of their 9 to 5 job because multiple sources of income can build to becoming more self-reliant and self-confident.

side hustle turned new career

There are thousands of stories about people who started a side hustle and then it turned into a full-time career. We’ve also seen at Pinot & Picasso that the once side hustle and full-time job switch roles.

When a side hustle becomes your passion, you set your heart on making it reach its full potential. At Pinot & Picasso, we’ve seen franchisees be allowed to live a flexible lifestyle and make a living thanks to local area marketing, an incredible concept and artworks for all ages that just keep people wanting to come back.

Seeing people make money off the back of doing something they love is one of the most fulfilling things you could ask for in life.

this side hustle can take you places

Considering the rapid growth in franchising, Pinot & Picasso franchisees have had to bite the bullet and look to own a studio remotely. While this may sound like a terrifying thing, we’ve seen incredible success.

Take Rebecca Auld, owner of Pinot & Picasso Bendigo, as a prime example. She couldn’t step foot into the rural community prior to opening her studio, but with strong local area marketing, she sold out her entire opening month.

Another benefit of this is that it gives you the opportunity to travel to a new place and call it your second home. In saying that, you don’t need to actually be there – the digital nature and mobility of our business allows you to operate from anywhere and everywhere.

the proof is in the pudding

There’s a reason Pinot & Picasso is the fastest growing paint and sip franchise in the country. With undoubted support from the Head Office team, they’ll help you make the most of your Pinot & Picasso studio, whether it’s a side hustle or not!

The nature of the sip and paint concept makes this side hustle fun and is why it really becomes a lifetime passion for our franchisees. There’s a reason why about 50% of our franchisees own more than one studio.

FRANCHISEE FOCUS: DEBBIE & KATRINA FROM REDCLIFFE

Pinot & Picasso Redcliffe
Debbie & Katrina took only SIX WEEKS to open their first Pinot & Picasso studio in Redcliffe. Their pure enthusiasm and passion for our lifestyle business drove them to being the ultimate movers and shakers!
We talked to both Debbie & Katrina about their journey so far, their upcoming plans, and what advice they’d give to those thinking about joining the Pinot & Picasso network!

How did you first hear about Pinot & Picasso?

KATRINA: After spending Saturday afternoon looking up franchise opportunities on random websites, Pinot & Picasso popped up as an ad on my Facebook feed later that night – they are always listening! I was immediately interested – not because I can paint but because it sounded like a fun & profitable business!

What convinced you to join Pinot & Picasso as a Franchisee?

KATRINA: After doing all of the Facebook stalking I could on Pinot & Picasso on a Sunday, I told Debbie about it on Monday at work. We decided then and there that it was the business for us and made contact with HQ that day. The biggest convincer for me was that the franchise information said we could have a studio up & running in six weeks… so, that’s what we did!

DEBBIE: I was convinced to join Pinot & Picasso as it was told to me that it’s a ‘lifestyle’ business, and that appealed to me.

You had your first studio up & running in six weeks! What was this process like becoming a Pinot & Picasso Franchisee?

KATRINA: It was a whirlwind and a blur, fuelled by coffee and wine! HQ met our pace and everything was pretty straightforward – they assisted when we needed help, and answered every question we had. We were given comprehensive guides for each step we needed to take in order to open in our desired timeframe. Everything fell into place quite easily. That being said, to save money, we did most of the shop-fit ourselves which was hard work! We completed a huge fit-out, flew to Sydney for a weekend of training at HQ, and hired & trained our staff in six weeks. At the time it was challenging, but looking back it was the most exciting and wonderful time watching it all come together with my bestie – we don’t like to do things slowly!

DEBBIE: The process was exciting. The training was empowering and encouraging – that propelled us to work hard to get it up & running. It was a whirlwind – a lot of planning and trips to Bunnings! It was busy, hot work as we did a lot of the physical work ourselves, and that has brought us alot of satisfaction looking back. All that combined with learning a new business made for a busy time, and having someone to share the workload was invaluable!

What has the community been like towards your studio?

KATRINA: One of the best things about having our studio where it is, is the friendly people and businesses around them. We are amazed how far guests travel to visit our ocean view studio in Redcliffe after someone tells them about us! The view is unbeatable!

We always make sure to be wearing our Pinot & Picasso shirts while out & about, and people stop us to ask about our studio no matter where we are. We have sponsored, supported and donated to every local community group that has reached out to us, and this has created amazing connections with locals.

DEBBIE: We have had great support from the community. The location of our Redcliffe studio has helped – who doesn’t love looking at the ocean? We have been contacted by many local businesses to organise pop-ups and we love being out meeting local businesses too.

What is a typical day for you as Franchisees?

KATRINA: First things first – Pilates followed by coffee! Then, it’s all business (and fun!) until 3pm – answering emails, planning session calendars, Zoom meetings, social media, pop-up venue inspections, staff meetings, long lunches – every day is different! It is generally prosecco time by 4pm! We visit each studio at least once a week – we trust our staff implicitly. Our great team of hosts and artists let us know when something needs attention. We can work as little or as much as we like on any given day, and we always try to have at least three days a week work-free.

DEBBIE: A typical day for us starts with Pilates and coffee! We then put our Franchisee hats on and get on the laptop to answer emails, cover social media, and staff rosters. We try to visit the studios only once a week to check stock, unpack stock, check cleaning, etc. Our staff really look after the studios, so we are very lucky.

You now have two studios, what was that decision like for both of you? Any plans for more?

KATRINA: Absolutely! We said from our very first phone call with HQ that we wanted three studios. We signed on for our second as soon as the dust settled on our first studio, and did it all again! It was a no-brainer and the decision was made together very quickly. It was so much easier the second time as we knew exactly what to do and who to call. We’re still waiting for the dust to settle on studio number two, but number three may not be too far away!

DEBBIE: Once we had completed Redcliffe, we wanted a new challenge. It was always our aim to own two or three studios, so watch this space!

What have been your biggest challenges as Franchise Owners?

KATRINA: Paperwork and number crunching! Not having structured or set work days have been a bit challenging for me, but I am making progress!

DEBBIE: The biggest challenge as a Franchise Owner for me is keeping up with the behind the scenes bookwork. The studio work is easy and a lot of fun, so it is easy to do. Whether it is adding sessions or sending our rosters, setting up for an event or even going into the studios to clean – I enjoy that! I don’t get excited by reconciling receipts, so that is a challenge for me.

Has becoming a Franchisee changed your life, if so how?

KATRINA: All for the better! Owning our own Pinot & Picasso studios has made life much more relaxed, enjoyable and flexible for myself and my family. I have something to be proud of, and I am challenged every day in a positive way. Also, the opportunity to get to know an amazing group of fellow Franchisees with the same goal – to make their studio’s the best they can be. All while having an amazing work and life balance!

DEBBIE: This franchise has given me a better work and life balance – I don’t feel like I am working. I have flexibility in my day and I spend my work life with my best friend, so I am very lucky.

What has been your favourite thing about Pinot & Picasso?

KATRINA: So many things, but first and foremost is the support received from HQ which makes this statement ring true – “you are in business for yourself, but not by yourself”. Having started my own business before, I struggled with the burden of it all being on my shoulders. Being a Franchisee and knowing I have a whole group of talented people to help with every facet of our business brings an incredible sense of calm and confidence – personally and professionally. All that and getting to work with my best friend every day are just a few of my favourite things. I could go on and on! It’s the best thing I have ever done!

DEBBIE: My favourite thing about Pinot & Picasso is that it is a lifestyle business when I know have the best work-life balance where my life is more than my work. Head Office is a great group of people to work with.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying a Pinot & Picasso Franchise?

KATRINA: JUST DO IT! Feel the fear and do it anyway! You won’t regret it – it’s the perfect balance between work and play. I would suggest diving in with a friend so you can share the adventure, the work & fun, the decisions, and make memories together. It has been an amazing ride so far and I am so glad I am part of the family that is Pinot & Picasso!

DEBBIE: I highly recommend this business if you want a fun, happy business to work in that gives your freedom in your everyday life. I strongly recommend having someone to do it with as not only does it share the workload, but you get to enjoy it more when you have someone to share the fun times with too!

Franchisee Focus: Rebecca Auld

Franchise Focus-Bendigo

We’ve talked about operating a Pinot & Picasso from a completely different state, and it is now a reality for some of our franchisees! We spoke to Pinot & Picasso owner, Rebecca Auld, and her experience operating her studio from her home in NSW!

How did you first hear about Pinot & Picasso?

I attended this newly talked about place called Pinot & Picasso in Terrigal as part of a mothers group night out. It was our first night out since having our babies and it followed the first lot of long COVID lockdowns! So, you can imagine we were super keen to be out! I was so worried about the painting part as my artist ability stopped at stick figures – I hoped my drinking would pull me through, ha! I hoped it was a bit like playing pool, the more you consume the better the artwork will be.

To my surprise, I loved the whole experience and was so proud of myself and my masterpiece! The experience made me feel very accomplished all at the same time of enjoying social time with friends, which was so very needed! My artwork (In the Old Gumtree) was placed in the loungeroom of our family home along with some of our children’s artworks. Kooka will soon be displayed in our Bendigo studio as a constant reminder of where it all began for us!

What convinced you to join Pinot & Picasso as a Franchisee?

I’m not sure we needed convincing as we were very keen to be part of this very clever business model and experience – I mean, who doesn’t want to drink, eat, paint, laugh and make money! After speaking with Aaron and James on a few occasions and also speaking with a couple of franchisees, we just felt it was the right fit for us and our family/business goals. The team at HQ were informative and being able to speak with other franchisees made us feel comfortable, answering all our questions (we did have a lot) and reassuring us of our decision to move forward.

What was the process like becoming a Pinot & Picasso Franchisee?

Pretty seamless really. Once we made the decision on our territory, it was all go, go, go from there! We had access to the information we needed to make some clear decisions and although the legal part is never fun, this seemed to be pretty straight forward. I attended the HQ training which really tied a lot of the early information and operational aspects together for me and then having a direct HQ contact such as Sally has been super helpful as a new Franchisee. I have met with Sally weekly in the lead up to Opening weekend and she has been a saviour in moments that mattered. HQ has done a lot of work developing the systems and processes in order to set us up for the best success!

What made you decide to operate an interstate studio?

There were not many options left for us in NSW and working remotely was not foreign to us in business so we thought why not, let’s look at another state and see what is available. We were given 5 territories as options within NSW, VIC, QLD and SA. We had both travelled to Regional VIC for work and pleasure. My husband and I both appreciate good art and great architecture and both growing up in smaller regional locations (him in the North Island of NZ); we know how important experiences such as P&P are for regional areas. It was as you would say, love at first sight when Bendigo territory was on the table – an absolute no-brainer!

Pinot & Picasso Bendigo

You’ve done everything without even going to Bendigo. What was the process like from finding your studio to getting it open?

It has been actually very smooth considering we have never stepped foot inside the location or been able to visit Bendigo in the lead up. The local community of Bendigo is very special, which we already knew from being visitors to the region, often taken in as a local during our trips there. We did our initial search ourselves for our studio and found a few options we thought would be a nice fit. We contacted the real estate agent who was able to give us even more information about the properties that made our decision even easier.

Aaron was our go-to person for the studio and he sorted all the negotiations from there, scoring us a great deal for the location. We planned out our opening and fit-out, and had the amazing help and support from Phia, HQ’s Victorian Studio guru! Phia was our feet on the ground as the extended lockdowns in NSW not letting us out of the state anytime soon. She took videos, photos and helped find our builder for us. Phia also helped get our staff up and running! We had a vision for the studio and this was brought to life by our builder and his team of professionals.

Our studio mural was very important to us as we really wanted it to bring to life the history that is stemmed so deeply in Bendigo. Funnily enough, I had been on the search for a mural artist since our Hello days. However, I placed our ad up for staff and this very quirky and fun loving person applied and told me of her mural she had completed recently in Bendigo – and the rest is history! She brought our vision and studio wall to life, it really is a must see! There is no mistaking which studio you are in when you look at our mural!

We wanted people in Bendigo to have a city experience without needing to go to the city and we have many people comment to us that the studio definitely gives off that vibe. We decided to add to the Paint & Sip experience and deck out our studio with a luxe lounge area and a selfie mirror, all lit up by a gorgeous chandelier. Our partner florist brough this space to life with an amazing flower wall hang – it has to be seen to be appreciated!

Hiring staff was my biggest concern during the whole process – something I assumed would actually be my easiest task given my background in business and HR. Being so far away and not being able to meet people personally was more difficult than I thought, as I like to build rapport and have that individual approach to recruiting the right people. We did everything virtual in the end and we have the most amazing team made of local artists and creatives who are ready to bring this experience to Bendigo!

We had the devastating news the week before opening weekend that VIC was to head into Lockdown 6.0. We had already come to terms with the fact that we would not be attending the opening weekend with NSW in lockdown, but to hear we may not even open as planned was gut wrenching. So many people had invested so much time thus far, we wanted it to open for them as much as for us. We had 10 booked out sessions prior to opening, the community was abuzz with the news of our new studio opening in Bendigo, and our staff were excited to get painting with guests. We stayed positive albeit unsure of what would happen and to our excitement, Regional VIC was lifted and we were back into the opening planning mode as quick as we could say Pinot! Opening weekend was so much fun! All the sleepless nights, late nights working and phone calls were all very worth it.

What has the community been like towards your business?

We have been overwhelmed with the support from the local community. They have embraced us with open arms and are just as excited (if not more) to have us opening our studio doors in their local area. I was needing to add more tickets, sessions and even went to opening up October sessions due to the level of demand in lead up to our opening. We had sold out sessions for August and September and this mostly before anyone had had a chance to step foot inside the studio (and some of these even purchased during a lockdown!). We will always be forever grateful and thankful for their support.

As a way of giving back to our local community, we have commenced ‘Local Thursdays’ where $5 from each ticket sold will go towards that month’s local community group/charity. Our mission is to be immersed and connected with our community, always.

What’s been your favourite thing about Pinot & Picasso?

There is so much to love about the P&P experience but if I need to pick one, it’s the feeling of family. There is a real sense of community and family amongst the network. Aaron, James and the team have set it up in a way that although you are part of this bigger Franchise, you still feel valued – whether you have one studio or five!

We also have many opportunities to come together and learn from each other. I have had other Franchisees reach out to offer support which has truly been a blessing, especially when Lockdown 7.0 happened and I was able to get some hands on support from the team at Ballarat.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about buying a Pinot & Picasso franchise?

Go for it! We will not be stopping at one studio and cannot wait to get our hands on another studio in the near future. It’s been exciting, tiring, liberating, stressful, and fun all at the same time, but when you see those smiles and hear from guests to say how amazing their experience was, it is all so very worth it. We really are part of something very special – who wouldn’t want to make money while having the best time of your life!?

SOLD OUT in NSW

P&P-SoldOut-NSW

First it was Sydney Metro, now it’s the entire state! Pinot & Picasso is officially SOLD OUT of locations in NSW. A feat that is unbelievable for our business that has only been franchising for 2 and a half years!

This new milestone for Australia’s #1 Paint & Sip Franchise has seen our company grow both interstate and internationally. We’ve started securing more territories in Victoria, South Australia & Queensland, as our first studios in Tasmania and Western Australia prepare to open next month to a brand new audience.

Last week, our first New Zealand studio opened their doors and introduced our unique Pinot & Picasso experience to excited Kiwis! It really is the start of a wonderful journey!

Although NSW might be out of territories, we still have some amazing locations across the country and in NZ available! A big positive of this is that we’ve seen many new Franchisees jump on board and take on the opportunity of owning a studio in another location or state.

Our HQ team is primed to help any Franchisee make their dream become a reality. At Pinot & Picasso, nothing is impossible and here is just a few reasons why we support anyone looking to own a studio from a distance:

We’re a digital, e-commerce based business!
Being an e-commerce platform, everything we do is managed online or within the digital space. Our website is manageable from everywhere, our advertising and social media spend is encouraged to be placed where we can see results, and all our lines of communication are cloud based. For an operator managing a business from distance, this is a dream.

Digital marketing is our jam!

We’re the first to admit that we aren’t artists, we’re marketers at heart. Building our business on a digital platform has always made us hyper aware that tracking sales is important. We know where every cent within our franchise business goes, and more importantly how much of that returns. With a strong relationship with our Digital Marketing Agency and years of experience/strategy within the digital space – we provide more and more opportunities for our Franchisee’s to make a healthy return.

Your Pinot & Picasso Life is managed from your pocket!
That’s right, we’ve even got our own app. From tracking attendees, refunds, to creating new sessions and processing payments for functions or large events – this app does it all. We like to ensure that Franchisee’s aren’t fish out of water when edits need to be made so we designed this thing for simplicity. The best part of it all? You can track your weekly sales as they come in.

We asked one of our Franchisees what it’s like operating a studio from a distance. Clinton from Pinot & Picasso Orange said:
“Challenging and rewarding all at the same time. The biggest challenge has been injecting ourselves into the local community and being accepted. This also meant long drives, time away from home and away from loved ones. However, we have met some amazing people on this journey and made some good friends throughout our adopted community. On top of this, we have a sound understanding of our region and can quite confidently call it a second home.”
